Slow cookers have been around for years. They are a very cheap and easy way of making a meal, and they are especially good for the busy lifestyles that we lead today. Simply put all the ingredients in the slow cooker, stir them around, turn it on and leave it to cook throughout the day. They are especially good for cheaper cuts of meat as they gently cook the joint making it tender and very tasty. Curries, chillies and stews all cook perfectly, as well as soups and broths. My mum swears by them, and now so do I!
In this article we will take a quick look at three small slow cookers that have been designed to cook up to 1.5 litres of ingredients. This size is perfect for one to two people and is also excellent for taking camping or in a caravan. They are easy to clean, affordable to use and buy, and will improve your meal times no end. They all cost between £16 to £20 (at the time of writing) and all have good reviews on the UK Amazon website.
Let us begin by looking at the Swan 1.5 litre Silver Stainless Steel Slow Cooker. Swan is a British brand with a long history. They have always been well known for their quality kitchen products, but it has been quite a while since I have seen their products for sale. I’m glad to see that they are still around although it appears that they have been through the mill a little. Fortunately, they are now owned by Tefal so you can be sure that they have a quality company supporting them. There are over 30 reviews of this Swan Slow Cooker on Amazon.co.uk, and in general they are very favourable results. This seems to be a quality slow cooker with the only complaints being from people how clearly did not bother to read the description of the actual product that they bought! It has a two year guarantee and as with most slow cookers it has a removable crock, three temperature settings and a glass lid. It is perfect for a single person and does not take up much space on the worktop so it would be great for students who are always struggling for space!
The second small slow cooker we will look at is made by a manufacturer that I have heard of before but one that does not have a long history like Swan does. Quest make a wide range of electric household items at good prices. They seem to aim for the mid-range market and they appear to have a good reputation on Amazon with many reviews in the four and five star bracket. The Quest Stainless Steel Slow Cooker is an attractive slow cooker with a small footprint, so it is perfect for small kitchens and motorhomes. A couple of reviewers mention that this Quest slow cooker cooks a little too fast (yes, strange I know) but the ‘keep warm’ setting is great for when you are not quite ready to eat but don’t want the food to get cold. Most people say that this slow cooker is perfect for creating a meal for two people, or a big meal for one if you’re feeling greedy!
Finally we shall review the last slow cooker in this article made by a manufacturer that features a lot on Kitchen & Cookshop. The Andrew James 1.5 Litre Premium Red Slow Cooker is highly recommended on Amazon although there have been a few complaints of the front temperature knob coming off. Some reviewers asked for a replacement, one returned theirs and bought the same item locally, but most others simply stuck theirs back on! Obviously there is a small issue with build quality here. Positive reviews on this slow cooker include people loving the oval shape and the lovely red colour. It has also been noted that this will comfortably cook a meal for two people. We too like the oval shape as it allows you to place longer cuts or joints of meat into the crock pot.
At present, the Andrew James Slow Cooker is priced £17.99, but it has been known to sell for as little as £12.99, which we at Kitchen & Cookshop consider an absolute bargain. This 1.5 litre slow cooker is also available in black – Andrew James 1.5 Litre Premium Black Slow Cooker – which is great if you are not keen on the red colour or if it doesn’t match the colour of your kitchen.
Slow Cooker reviews over… which is the winner?
So, what do we think at Kitchen and Cookshop? Which small slow cooker reviewed here would we buy if it were our money? That’s a tough choice to make because, to be honest, they are all winners! All these slow cookers are recommended by people that have purchased them on Amazon.co.uk. These slow cooker reviews are positive in the main which makes choosing our favourite a hard decision. Despite a small issue with quality control at Andrew James, I think that I would buy the Andrew James 1.5 Litre Premium Red Slow Cooker. The oval shape just tips the balance of favour for me. I can see myself cooking lamb shank or large turkey legs in this slow cooker, which I may struggle to fit into the Quest Stainless Steel Slow Cooker or the Swan 1.5 litre Silver Stainless Steel Slow Cooker, both of which have round shaped crock pots. Of course, the oval shape means that this slow cooker has a slightly larger footprint but this is not something that matters to me, although it might to you. Any of these brilliant little slow cookers would be a great bargain at their RRP which is often around the £16+ mark. Whichever 1 or 2 person slow cooker you choose from these three, you are going to get a quality product which will make your life in the kitchen so much easier and healthier. Don’t delay – get a slow cooker today!
